  1. Great Location, great Architecture - great wall - but watch the amounts on any receipts you get!

The location is very cool - it is in a valley, and on the grounds of the hotel is a private part of the Great Wall - in fact the part that has been first restored in the 1950s. It is not as polished as the "new" parts of the wall, but actually I liked this a lot more.

The architecture is also very cool, and the intention to construct spectacular housing that fits well into the surroundings really does work. From our room, we could see the wall - that was clearly a benefit.

But there were two big factors that don't fit with the overall first impression: the breakfast is rather lousy - it is served until 10, but when we arrived at shortly after 9, the majority of the dishes was empty already - or cold, as the burners were down and not replaced. Hairs in the croissant basket and a non functioning toaster did not make it better. When ordering a la carte lunch later, the quality of the food was very good - sad that they cannot transport it to the breakfast location and buffet.

The more disappointing point was that when we checked out, we ordered a taxi, and gave the required 300 RMB deposit. We also got a receipt, but we did not look onto it - big mistake, later it turned out it only said 200 RMB. And that was the amount that was produced after insisting from a closed envelope. Only after reviewing the security tapes, that situation was corrected again.

The Hotel used to be managed by Kempinski, and the standard at that time was very high. Now it is under chinese management, and the quality of service is shrinking. If you want to go there, go soon - and check your receipts closely.
